The Future's Not Ours to See

When I grew up and fell in love

This song was one the favorite songs of my French Canadian Uncle Ovila. Whenever he and his brother and sisters would gather around my grandmother at parties, they would sing this song. It along with other saying like "Se la guerre" (It's a battle) and "Se la vie" (That's life) formed his philosophy of living and the basis of his myth (see What Myth Are You Living?).

It's good that "the future is not ours to see," for if we were able to see the future, it would cloud our present. If crytal-ball-gazing psychics could really see a person's future and were honest with them, they would go out of business because no one would go back to them and would warn others not to go. If my uncle had foreseen that one day he would be carrying his dying mother into the Emergency Room, he would have lost his zest for living. When we live in the fullness of the present moment in total awareness of our being one with the source of life, there is no worry about possible futures or regrets about the past.

We're all slated to die at some point, whether that be 30 years or 30 days from now. When is not important. How is. Do we die in fear and regret or in acceptance and peace? But more importantly, how do we live in the meantime? Do we live in our egoic mind or in spirit? Live an inspired life and you will not care what the future will bring. And at the moment of death, you will be present and experience it fully as the incredibly beautiful experience that it is. For it is a homecoming. Omraam said, "Death is only a change of domicile, and for those who are truly spiritual, it's a liberation, a crowning, a triumphant reception."

Living on this Earth in this body/mind system is like being in a deep-sea diving suit with sensors penetrating the darkness of this dense level of being. We can have fun exploring but don't complain when our mission is done and are pulled up to the tropical paradise above. That is our true home and we have no fear or regret shuffling off this cumbersome deep diving suit and finding freedom in the cool air, sunlight, beach, and shallow water. That is what will be.
