Symbolism in the Dream of Life

One night, I dreamt of leaving my home and walking outside into a thick white fog. As I walked, I heard thunder and saw flashes of lightning and realized that I was in a stormcloud. So, I returned to my home only to find that the white cloud, thunder, and lightning were now inside my home also. I woke up and remembered my dream. Then I thought I was still dreaming because I saw a flash of light through my window followed by a loud rumbling. A storm was raging outside my bedroom. At least it wasn’t raging inside my bedroom as in my dream.

I thought how interesting it was that nature reinforced my dream. Was nature underscoring the symbolism of a storm (negative emotions, crying, uncertainty, violence) inside my home (a place of refuge from the stress and vicissitudes of the world)? I meditated on what the symbolism could be pointing to and immediately realized that it was a warning of what would happen if we allowed an emotional addicted person to move into our home. Fortunately, they found other living arrangements and a stormy home situation was avoided.

A friend of mine recently had three flat tires within a month, and I wondered what the symbolism of these events in their life dream was telling them. A tire is to a car what a foot is to a body. With a flat tire or injured foot, you can’t move forward. Also, the foot, along with the base of the spine, represents our spiritual foundation. So flat tires symbolize a sinking foundation, which can cause cracks in the structure of our lives if we use the analogy of a house foundation.

The first two flat tires were caused by the rear struts being worn out and no longer supporting the rear end, causing the tires to rub up against the wheel bay, tearing the tire. This symbolism of lack of support goes well with a sinking foundation. Fixing the struts and tires was easy. But fixing the problems they were symbols of is not so easy. My friend is not aware that life is a dream and that events in our lives, just as events in dreams at night, are symbolic of things we need to pay attention to. Also, finding support in our lives or shoring up our spiritual foundation is not as easy as bolting on a set of struts or putting on new tires.

So, pay attention to the symbols in dreams and the dream of life. What are they telling you?
