Singin' in the Rain

“Be still, sad heart! and cease repining; Behind the clouds is the sun still shining; Thy fate is the common fate of all, Into each life some rain must fall, Some days must be dark and dreary.” —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Rain is good. Without rain, crops wouldn’t grow and the Earth would turn into a barren desert. But some people complain every time it rains. They don’t go with the flow; they resist the cycles of nature. They want to see the sun shine all the time in their outer and inner worlds. Water is the element associated with feelings. If there were no rain, no water or emotions in our life, we wouldn't be burdened with negative emotions at times. But we also wouldn't be uplifted by positive emotions of joy, peace, and love. Life would be a barren desert.
The first pillar of The Way taught by awarenessnow.com frees you from this resistance to what is. You don’t complain when it rains, or when the roof leaks after a hail storm, or when you get sick. You accept it without regret, expectations, or demands because you know that everything happens exactly as it should. The rain ends a drought. The leaky roof leads to the discovery that the hailstorm damaged it and the AC unit and that insurance will replace them. The illness gives you time to reflect on your life and make changes.
Rather than complaining about the rain or an apparent misfortune, accept it as the gift that it is. Like a birthday or Christmas present, you can’t see what the gift is at first because it’s covered. But as subsequent thoughts, feelings, and events unravel it, you come to see it as the precious gift that it is and celebrate . So, the next time a little rain falls into your life, you can sing along with Gene Kelly:
I’m singin’ in the rain, just singin’ in the rain.
What a glorious feeling, I’m happy again.
I’m laughing at the clouds, so dark up above.
The sun’s in my heart, and I’m ready for love…
Why am I smiling and why do I sing?
Why does December seem sunny as Spring?
Why do I get up each morning to start
Happy and head-up with joy in my heart?
Why is each task a trifle to do?
Because I’m living a life full of you.
