Nurture Motherhood

Omraam wrote in The Role of the Mother during Gestation, “Throughout her pregnancy, a mother must try to create an atmosphere of purity and light around her child, so that she can work in collaboration with the incoming soul. Even though she cannot see this soul, she can at least talk to it: ‘Look, I will help you, I will give you the best materials, but you too can give qualities and virtues to my child so that it may become a magnificent being.’ The moment a mother utters these powerful, magical words, specific particles emanate from her and the spirit of the incarnating child takes them so as to build its different bodies. The child itself has nothing, it receives all it needs from its mother. That is why she must be conscious and, by her thoughts and feelings, give it only the most luminous and purest particles.”

Mothers are so important in the development of a soul. Fathers are important too and will be discussed in a future flow, but mothers more so, since they nurture a fetus 24/7 with their body, thoughts, feeling, words, songs, and touch from conception to birth and beyond. Yet we pay so little attention to motherhood, prenatal health and environment, and parenthood. It’s not properly taught, and young parents are expected to just know or learn from their parents who were equally unprepared. It’s true that every woman instinctively is a good mother, but it takes more than instinct; it takes nurturance and the knowledge of how to nurture through our thoughts, feelings, and words.

So many of society’s evils could be prevented or lessened by better preparation of parents and the birth of babies. Parenting classes teach the basics of proper prenatal nutrition; avoidance of cigarettes, drugs, and alcohol; and how to nurse and change diapers. But they don’t teach the important knowledge of how to nurture. When I graduated from college, the commencement speaker’s theme was nurturance. That was the only time in my 16 years of education when nurturance was taught. We live in a patriarchal society that puts emphasis on achievement and competition. In a matriarchal society, we would be more focused on collaboration and mutual success. We are starting to see this in education and business as we enter the New Age. We are also seeing more love for our Earth mother.

Years ago, I wrote a collection of short stories, Children of the Sun, one of which was “Marisol and Pachamama.” Here’s an excerpt from it:

Pachamama spoke to Marisol's heart. “Oh, my beloved daughter, you love me and respect me because you love and respect your mother. You were your mother's firstborn when she and your father were young and full of hope. So, your mother took special care of herself and you both before and after you were born and your father supported her. That's why you're so close to her, and, through her, to me. For through your mother, I gave you life! If you respect and honor your mother, you will respect and honor me. “If every mother took good care of themselves and each of their babies, and had their husband's full support, every child would love me as much as you do. And when they grow up, they wouldn't tear me open and poison my land and water with mine wastes, chemicals, and garbage. But as it is, some babies aren't nurtured enough by their mothers. The boys grow up with lack of respect for their mothers and all women and me. Girls grow up feeling unworthy of love and separated from me. So, when they marry, they aren't respected or supported enough when they are with child. And so, the vicious cycle continues.”

“This cycle must be broken! But how?” cried Marisol.

“By taking care of mothers to be, just as you took care of the plants in this garden. When you are old enough, you will find a big house in the country with gardens and orchards and comfortable airy rooms that mothers can enjoy while they await the birth of their babies, and afterwards they can give all their love and attention to them. Their children will love them and they will love and respect me, themselves, and others. And when the fathers visit, you can teach them how to love their wives just as Father Sun loves me. Every morning he bathes me with his rosy-hued rays and touches me tenderly with the warmth of his love. Tell the fathers to gaze at the Sun at dawn so that they might take on his qualities and become more supportive to their wives.”

So, Marisol thanked Pachamama and went to the city of Lima where she did well in school and studied to become a nurse. When she married a doctor, she established a home for expectant mothers with gardens, orchards, and comfortable airy rooms, just as Pachamama predicted. And the children who were born there grew up to be very wise and gentle and didn't harm others or the Earth. So, because of Marisol, the Earth is a little better place than it used to be. We can be part of this story too by loving our mothers and being loving mothers and fathers when we grow up
