Let Your Higher Self Drive

Yesterday, while searching for pictures of masters that I could use to receive flows from them, I came across a book I had read over 20 years ago, The Way of the Higher Self by Thomas James Hickey. I knew right away that my Higher Self was signaling to me that it would give a flow. So, I read the first few pages last night in preparation. One of the first pages had just the following centered on the page:
"Who am I? How did this world come about? What is its nature? How did birth and death come to be? Inquire thus within yourself. The benefit will be great.” —Annapurna Upanishad I.40
So, I wrote down “Who am I? on a sticky note, used as a bookmark, and stuck it under my pillow along with my notebook. During the night, I had inspired thoughts and dreams, from which I would awaken to jot down snippets that formed some of the content of this flow.
I AM That, thou art That, all this is nothing but That. That is the answer to your question. This body and mind is like a car with its computer. The ego thinks it’s the driver, but it’s in a driver ed car. I am the teacher/driver who takes control at times when you go too fast, don’t use the brakes or signals, or break the rules. Sometimes, I let you get into an accident or get stopped and fined because it's importnt to learn karmic lessons. But it's even more important to learn to let me drive and be content to enjoy the ride. It will take work to get to that point.
You are your human self and I AM your Divine Self. Therein lies the dilemma of human existence. Hickey wrote, "To take yourself as bound by space, time, change, and form is to identify with your lower self, your individual ego, which is merely a limited aspect of your true nature as a human being. The way out of this ignorance lies through being open to that which is unlimited within yourself, the Higher Self…the Way of the Higher Self, the fundamental principle of which is ‘Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be open for you.’ The Higher Self is the meeting point between the lower self…and…the Universal Self."
People are constantly seeking, asking, and knocking on doors to find meaning in their lives. The problem is they’re searching in all the wrong places in outer things: jobs, relationships, and sensory activities. Very little inner searching goes on. All this outer searching has made people insensitive to their inner life that contains the answers they seek. They try to find fulfillment in outer roles but can only find it in Being. People relegate spirituality to an hour or so one day a week, if that, and want the priest, minister, rabbi, or mullah to do it for them while they sit back and listen to words of wisdom or fall asleep. They are asleep whether or not they listen. They have not awakened to the reality of their Being and are not doing it for themselves, what Gurdjieff termed “Being-Partdolg-Duty.” This is the conscious labor and intentional suffering of striving on the path of initiation. It involves awakening to our ego and watching it, being conscious of our thoughts, emotions, words, and gestures and mastering them. Then we become one with our Higher Self and let it drive our life.
