Give Birth to Your Baby

Within each of us is the seed or egg of potential to create something new. It could be a novel, a song, a painting, an invention, a building, a spiritual movement, or a baby. As cocreative sons and daughters of God, we are all creators. We just need to find the time and a quiet, safe place to nurture our creation, to gestate until we give birth to it.

In dealing with authors, I find many of them refer to their book as their "baby." And it truly is, for they have spent months in labor giving birth to it. As their editor, I'm just a midwife, helping them with the final push and cleaning up the mess so that their baby is clean and wrapped in a cover.

Whatever your creation is, find a midwife, someone to help you during the difficult process of giving birth, an editor who knows more than you and can help you correct mistakes, a mentor who can be by your side every step of the way to advise you. You cannot go it alone. It's also important to nourish yourself with ideas that support your creation. If you're an artist, go out in nature and be inspired. In fact, nature will inspire any sort of creation.

Any new creation, whether it be a baby, painting, novel, or invention has to first be conceived. You first have to have a conception of it, an inspired (spirit infused) idea (or body in the case of a baby) that slowly grows cell by cell, word by word, paint stroke by paint stroke, bolt by bolt, until it is whole, manifested, physical. You need to nurture that growing creation with enthusiasm (from the Latin "to be possessed by a god"). Otherwise, you will miscarry, and that would be a great loss for you and for the world. For your creation is meant to bless the world. Don't think of your creation as "my baby." It's something that you create to give to the world. Don't identify with it. Cut the umbilical cord and let it go. Just be grateful that you gave birth to it and that it will help others. Then go on to create another baby.
