Break the Spell of Circe and Continue Your Quest

In "Golden Rules for Everyday Life," Omraam said, "There are different ways of being contented... Animals...are satisfied with their lot because they have no perception of their limittions and no reason to try to progress beyond them. This mentality is normal for animals, but it is not good for human beings, although, in fact, many of them are quite satisfied with it."

In Homer's Odyssey, on the way back from the Trojan War, Odysseus visits the island of Aeaeaon where the witch Circe lives. She changes most of his crew into pigs. They forget their purpose, their quest, and become content with just eating and drinking, with the pleasures of the flesh. This myth is an allegory of modern times. People have forgotten their purpose as sons and daughters of God and are just human animals, content with material things. They have become obese with eating, drinking, and being merry, and they die prematurely. Even a pig has more purpose, for a pig's meat is used as food after it dies.

Who or what is the witch that transforms people into pigs? It's the witch of self-indulgence that first casts a spell of forgetfulness upon people. They forget that they are heroes on a quest to find the elixir of life. Then the witch tempts them with pleasures of the senses that slowly but surely transform them into pigs that are "satisfied with their lot," their pig sty. And there they stay unless some hero breaks the spell and reminds them of their higher purpose.

For as sons and daughters of God, we will truly be content only in Being. Only by being present in the now and accepting what is can we be free of cravings, complaints, resentments, and fears. We accept out karma and dharma. But as Omraam further said, "never be satisfied with one's present degree of evolution, always...strive to make progress." This striving is what gets us back on our hero's journey. It's what makes us eat healthy food, give up addictions, exercise, improve our lives, pursue a selfless purpose, and attain enlightenment.

When we are enlightened, we have reached the goal of our quest and are transformed from human animals to divine beings. But to reach this goal, we have to go through the initiation of death and resurrection. That will be the topic of a future blog.
